A safe and comfortable-working place is extremely significant to the final yield of an organisation. Several studies and research indicate that it helps in making employees happier and make them willing to contribute more. It also keeps the employees stay aligned to the vision, mission and goals of the company.
How can individuals contribute towards making their own workplace safe, comfortable and inspiring?
Below are few tips, for employees including managers, to keep in mind so as to build a desirable organisational culture -
Effective regular communication: Poor or no communication is often said to create misunderstandings. One should not only have regular communication with their stakeholder base but also be precise and appropriate in their communication. Regular communication on deliverables, expectations and possible areas of conflict helps address unforeseen struggles. Both interpersonal and interdepartmental communication is central to smooth functioning
Encouraging collaboration: Collaboration not only helps in bringing newer perspectives and ideas to the forefront but also helps in the inclusion of all team members and push them towards cohesive working in-turn improving overall work environment
Being transparent: Being transparent and displaying endorsement towards a culture of transparency by leaders helps breed trust between stakeholders. Managers can lead by example for their team members to get inspired. Transparency also includes revealing the decision-making process, keeping open door policies, giving genuine feedback etc
Celebrating successes: Rejoicing work milestones and successes together helps in improving the bond between employees and employers at the workplace. It also motivates employees to achieve higher goals.
Being respectful and allowing personal space: Employees while dealing with their colleagues and other stakeholders must behave in an amicable manner displaying respect for the other party. Several behaviours can also be considered intruding into personal space. Employees should be sensitive towards the personal space of each other and avoid any kind of personal remarks/interpretations or seeking personal information.
Apart from the above points it is also important for employees and stakeholders to know and have access to confidential reporting channels through which they can report breaches of Company Code or incidents of harassment including sexual harassment. Awareness of what constitutes harassment is also important to be conveyed from time to time. Communication tools are used in Jubilant from time to time to spread awareness on various aspects of Code.
